August 25th 2022 - Garden Party
December 5th 2022 - Christmas Lunch
Each year the members select a charity to support. Proceeds from our monthly book sale, refreshments and sundry ad-hoc events go to the selected charity. Our charity for 2022/2023 is Brentwood Imperial Youth Band.
The Brentwood Imperial Youth Band is a traditional marching band based in Brentwood. It was founded in 1990 to provide local youth with an environment to develop life skills in a fun, safe and musical way.
Since then the band has developed into a highly successful group with a renowned international reputation. With over 100 members, led by a cadre of staff who are all volunteers, the youngest musicians are just 10 years old and many of the new recruits join the band with no previous musical experience. With a multifunctional capability, the band performs at concerts, parades and tattoos throughout the year.
They aim to encourage and train young musicians to develop both mentally and physically for the demands of musical performance. They teach them to play music and march. With an "open door" approach they welcome young people of any ability. No experience is needed and no instrument required. Only the desire to learn.
New members are always welcome.
Membership is open to anyone no longer in full-time employment.
If you are thinking of joining us you are welcome to attend one of our monthly meetings as a guest - you will meet a committee member at the door and they will sign you in as a guest for the afternoon - so if you are coming alone you will not be alone for long.
Our current annual membership fee is £20. This entitles members to attend the monthly meetings, to take part in activity groups and to receive a monthly newsletter. The fee includes a membership fee paid to our national organisation, the Third Age Trust, which provides a wide range of services and benefits, including a magazine (5 times a year) and liability insurance cover.
Membership of certain Groups may incur expenses such as books, materials, travel costs for outings and hire of venue.
Our constitution is based on the Model Constitution recommended by the Third Age Trust.
The day-to-day affairs of the group are co-ordinated by a committee who are elected annually at our AGM.
All members are encouraged to volunteer to take a turn on the committee. The admin tasks are shared out to try and ensure that no one has to onerous a job and our constitution provides that members may only serve on the committee for three years before "taking a break".
